The Embu High Court has taken custody of 134 ballot boxes and other materials used in the Mbeere North parliamentary by-election as the hearing of a petition challenging the results continues.

The election materials were on Tuesday delivered to the court by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) following earlier orders issued by Justice Richard Mwongo.

Justice Mwongo directed that the ballot boxes, ballot papers and related electoral materials be preserved under tight security within the court premises to safeguard their integrity during the determination of the case.

While giving directions on the conduct of the petition, the judge noted that electoral laws require the court to conclude and deliver its ruling within 60 days from the start of the hearing.

He set May 28 as the deadline for the delivery of the judgment, underscoring the need for an expedited and orderly process in resolving election disputes.

The case seeks to overturn the outcome of the Mbeere North parliamentary by-election, with the preserved materials expected to play a critical role in the court’s final determination.
