Embu County Cooperative Societies and Saccos are performing exceptionally well, County Director of Cooperative David Muriuki has said.
Muriuki said the county, through its 307 cooperatives from 23 sectors, boasts an asset base of Sh15 billion and achieved a turnover of Sh4 billion last year.
“In Embu County, we have five deposit-taking cooperatives including Winas, Nawiri, Daima, Biashara Tosha, and County Sacco, and all are performing well,” he said.
However, Muriuki acknowledged that some Saccos, particularly smaller ones, faced financial and management challenges.
He attributed these issues to financial illiteracy, small membership bases, and poor leadership.
To address these challenges and maintain positive performance records, Muriuki said the Embu County government, through the Department of Cooperatives, plans to build capacity to support struggling Saccos.
“We will be moving to every Ward building capacity on ways to attract new members, Financial management, and good leadership, especially in lower parts of Embu which includes Mbeere North and Mbeere South sub-counties where some Saccos are struggling to thrive,” he said.
Muriuki advised residents interested in joining cooperatives and Saccos to seek guidance from the cooperatives department to avoid falling victim to fraudulent Saccos.
He emphasized that new Saccos wishing to operate in the county must obtain permits from the county government.
“We are very keen to identify cooperatives that are prone to fraudulence as we normally do spot checks according to Section 60 A of the Cooperatives Act. If any is found to be operating under fraudulence bases action will be taken, “he noted.
Elsewhere, a rural society based in Mbeere South Sub-county has reported double growth since last year.
Mbessa Pride Society Sacco chairman Pius Njeru announced that members would receive an 8.7 percent dividend up from 7 percent the previous year.
Njeru attributed the growth to continuous financial education provided to members by Sacco’s Management, which has seen its members understand issues regarding personal finances.
He spoke during the Sacco’s general meeting held at their headquarters in Kiritiri town, Mbeere South.
