Authorities in Embu County have issued a seven-day ultimatum to all scrap metal dealers to surrender any stolen materials to combat the escalating theft of public infrastructure.
The directive comes amid rising concerns over the rampant vandalism and theft of essential public assets, water meters and pipes, sign boards, litter bins, and metal fencing posts.
The county government of Embu suspended the scrap metal business recently, citing massive vandalism of government infrastructures.
Scrap Metal Council chairman, Francis Mugo said after a consultative meeting with scrap Metal stakeholders, they agreed that the suspension would continue until proper vetting is done.
He emphasized the legitimacy of the scrap metal business, arguing that vandalism has caused counties greater losses.
