A group of compassionate individuals undertook a heartwarming initiative to uplift the spirits of elderly residents in Kathunguri village of Runyenjes Constituency, Embu County.
The initiative by the Catholic Justice and Peace Department (CJPD) aimed not only to offer much-needed sustenance but also to sow the seeds of hope and growth by distributing fruit seedlings.
Armed with foodstuffs and an assortment of avocado seedlings, the church group visited local homes where elderly individuals reside.
“We visit the elderly and vulnerable people within our parish to share the joy of the holiday season annually. This time, we also came with avocado seedlings embracing Pope Francis’s call to environmental stewardship,” said Fr. Justin Muriuki, the CJPD coordinator.
The initiative underscores the connection between humanity and nature, emphasizing that caring for the Earth is akin to nurturing our shared home.

“Pope Francis’s teachings guide us to recognize our responsibility as stewards of the Earth. The type of trees we are giving them create a greener and healthier environment while simultaneously providing a sustainable food source for residents,” he added.
Fr. Muriuki noted that the visitation program doesn’t only target Catholics, emphasizing the unity and joy that transcends religious affiliations. He noted that Christians contributed to fund the initiative.
The visitation program saw members engaging in heartfelt conversations with the seniors, creating an atmosphere of companionship and shared experiences.
“We believe in the power of community and the positive impact it can have on the lives of our elderly neighbors. This initiative is a small gesture to show them that they are not forgotten, and their well-being matters to us,” said Geoffrey Nyaga, the group chairman.
Jane Karimi, daughter of a beneficiary, expressed gratitude for the unexpected visit, a statement echoed by Teresina Ngai aged 84 years.

“It warms my heart to know that there are people who care about us. The foodstuffs brought are a great help, and the little plant makes me look forward to nurturing something new,” said Ngai.
The initiative fostered a sense of community raising awareness about the challenges faced by elderly individuals, particularly those living alone or in care facilities.
