The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has concluded a four-day Media Capacity Building Workshop in Nanyuki, Laikipia County, bringing together journalists from the Central and Eastern regions to strengthen their understanding of broadcasting and Kenya’s fast-growing ICT sector.

The forum, held from November 3rd to 6th, 2025, focused on enhancing collaboration between the Authority and media professionals, equipping them with knowledge to sensitize the public on ICT developments, opportunities, and government achievements in the digital space.

Speaking during the event, Dr. Emma Otieno, CA’s Regional Manager for the Central and Eastern Region, said Kenya’s ICT sector has experienced remarkable expansion in recent years, driving innovation, empowering youth, and transforming businesses.

“The ICT industry has changed how Kenyans live and work. Our goal for this workshop is to engage journalists so they can educate the public about the government’s achievements and the immense opportunities in this space,” she said.

Dr. Emma noted that over the past five years, the two regions have witnessed significant growth in mobile usage, broadband connectivity, and network coverage, largely supported by the Universal Service Fund (USF).

She said, currently, about 98 percent of Kenyans have access to 3G and 4G services, contributing to increased digital inclusion.

She also highlighted CA’s milestones since its rebranding from the Communications Commission of Kenya in 2014.

“These include digital TV migration, an increase in frequency penetration to nearly 60 percent, and continued investment in innovation hubs such as the Sandbox platform, which provides guidance and mentorship for innovators,” she said.

Mr. Francis Sitati, Senior Officer in charge of Cybersecurity Information, Advocacy and Partnerships at CA, underscored Kenya’s advancements in cybersecurity over the past 25 years.

“Cybersecurity remains a national priority. Through the National KE-CIRT/CC, we collaborate with more than 50 organizations across government and the private sector to enhance awareness and ensure quick responses to emerging cyber threats,” said Sitati.

He added that regular capacity-building sessions and quarterly stakeholder meetings have been instrumental in improving the country’s cybersecurity resilience and coordination.

CA officer, Mr. Victor Maina highlighted the Authority’s community-driven approach to ICT development, saying they work closely with chiefs, sub-chiefs, county governments, and local initiatives such as Nyumba Kumi to ensure community ownership of ICT projects.

Dr. Emma also noted that county governments and the Council of Governors play a critical role in ensuring that ICT projects are effectively implemented and embraced by local communities.

She lauded journalists for their active participation and commitment to learning, saying their role is vital in educating the public.

“Media operators are powerful agents of change. We count on journalists to use their platforms — TV, radio, and digital publications — to promote ICT adoption and inform citizens about new opportunities,” she said.

Among the participants, Felix Muriithi, a manager at Kimuri Radio 100.6FM in Embu, described the workshop as insightful and impactful.

“This was a great milestone in engaging regional media houses. Local stations are close to the people, and this kind of engagement ensures that communities receive first-hand information in their own languages. We commend the CA for its continuous partnerships and for driving technology growth that is expanding opportunities, especially in online radio, TV, and digital publications,” said Muriithi.

The Nanyuki workshop is part of a nationwide series of regional engagements by the Communications Authority aimed at building media capacity and strengthening partnerships across Kenya’s ICT ecosystem.

As Kenya moves closer to achieving the goals of Vision 2030, CA says it remains committed to innovation, improved service quality, and ensuring every Kenyan benefits from the digital revolution.
