Athletics Kenya (AK) Embu branch hosted a celebratory dinner at The Ark Riverline Hotel in Gakwegori, Embu County over the weekend, to honor local athletes who have excelled in track events.

The occasion highlighted the achievements of six exceptional athletes from the County, who will represent the Eastern Region at the upcoming National Trials in Mombasa.

The event brought together athletes from both the Senior and Junior Camps, serving as a moment to celebrate hard work, dedication, and the pursuit of excellence in athletics.

Some athletes were presented with new spikes for training, alongside other awards to further motivate them.

In addition to those heading to the National Trials, athletes who had performed outstandingly at the National Cross Country Championship in Eldoret were also recognized for their achievements.

Stephen Njeru, the Embu AK Chair, delivered an inspiring address praising the athletes for their hard work and urging them to remain disciplined.

He emphasized the importance of integrity in the sport warning that “Doping can shatter your career forever.”

His message underscored the values of fair play and the importance of maintaining a clean record in athletics.

Njeru also highlighted the significance of Embu County’s first-time representation at the National Trials, crediting the success to the Junior Camp, established two years ago.

This year, the county will be represented in a variety of events, including the 100 meters, 200 meters, walking, high jump, and long jump.

He further emphasized the partnership between AK Kenya Embu and various stakeholders, which aims to maximize the county’s high-altitude training environment.

The St. Marks Teachers Training College, a key venue in the region, serves as an ideal high-altitude camp for local athletes and the national team.

This partnership allows athletes to train in a world-class environment, providing a competitive edge ahead of major international competitions.

“With this collaboration, we hope to attract more young athletes to the Junior Camp and allow them to develop their skills and eventually compete on the international stage,” said Njeru.

The young athletes, many of whom are students, were visibly excited and grateful for the recognition and the opportunities ahead.

Their enthusiasm and commitment to representing Embu County with pride were evident as they prepared for the upcoming track events.

The event marked a milestone in Embu’s growing reputation as a hub for athletic talent. The support from AK Embu, local stakeholders, and the community reflects a unified commitment to fostering talent and nurturing the next generation of athletes.

As these athletes set their sights on the National Trials in Mombasa, their achievements serve as a testament to the power of dedication and community support in the pursuit of sporting excellence.
