Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire on Saturday led celebrations to mark the centenary of Embu Level 5 Hospital, describing it as a “beacon of health and healing” that has served the community for a century.

Speaking during the historic event, Mbarire highlighted a string of reforms and investments that have transformed the hospital into what she termed “the best maternal hospital in the region.”

“Today is a moment to reflect on how far we have come, to appreciate the progress we have made, and to renew our commitment to making Embu Level 5 Hospital a world-class health facility for generations to come,” she said.

Over the past three years, the hospital has expanded maternity services, raising daily patient numbers from 20 to over 60. The Newborn Unit has been revamped, new baby cots installed in the Kangaroo Ward, and maternal care significantly improved.

To address frequent drug shortages, the county signed agreements with KEMSA and MEDS, clearing pending bills and emerging as the top hospital in medical products uptake at MEDS, earning national recognition.

The governor also announced the acquisition of two modern mortuary units, doubling of surgical theatres from three to six, and revival of a broken oxygen plant that had forced the facility to rely on Meru for supplies.

Health CECM Jamal Runyenje hailed the milestone as a moment of gratitude and renewed commitment. “We are grateful to the Almighty for the blessings and the opportunity to serve,” he said.

Runyenje noted that the journey of transformation at the hospital has been a collective effort by staff, county leadership, and partners, and called for continued teamwork to sustain the gains.

“We found a greatly understaffed, beaten, and demotivated workforce. Beyond recruiting within our budgetary limits, we have continuously engaged our staff, promoted specialists, and long-serving officers who had stagnated for over seven years,” Mbarire added.

Other investments include two ultra-modern dental chairs, a new X-ray machine, an ultrasound, and the ongoing construction of a state-of-the-art Emergency and Trauma Centre.

“These milestones reflect deliberate efforts to restore efficiency, dignity, and excellence at Embu Level 5 Hospital,” Mbarire said, adding that the facility remains central to the county’s healthcare vision.
