At least 60 teenage mothers have been enrolled back in different day schools across Embu County through a program dubbed Restored Hope.

The program initiated by Embu Woman Representative Pamela Njoki Njeru alias Double N aims at re-enrolling and supporting young mothers in their pursuit of education.

The program focuses on providing comprehensive support, including educational resources and mentorship, with the ultimate goal of empowering young women to achieve academic success while navigating the responsibilities of parenthood.

Speaking during the launch of the program at Kangaru High School, Njoki expressed her commitment to addressing the challenges faced by teenage mothers prompted by lack of education.

According to Njoki, at least 20% of girls between the ages of 15 and 19 are teen mothers in Kenya with 13, 000 girls dropping out of school every year countrywide.

“In the 13, 000 girls dropping out of school, Embu County is not exceptional. We started this program to cushion the teen mothers and their children against negative long-term outcomes due to pregnancy that disrupted their education,” she said.

“Education is a powerful tool for empowerment, and every young mother deserves the opportunity to pursue her dreams and build a better future for herself and her child,” Njoki said.

The program will be sustained through the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) and will fund teenage mothers’ education in high school to colleges and Universities depending on their strengths.

The meeting was attended by Embu County Commissioner Mr. Jack Obuo, DCCs, principals, guardians, and beneficiaries.

Mr Obuo encouraged the parents of teenage mothers to support their education and change their attitude towards the girls to prevent stigma.

He said the government in collaboration with other stakeholders was making concrete plans to rescue the boy child who is now endangered.

The teenage mothers who spoke applauded the initiative, recognizing the importance of breaking the cycle of limited educational opportunities for young mothers.
