As Mbeere North Constituency gears up for the November 27 parliamentary by-election, residents have outlined key development priorities they want the next Member of Parliament to address — top among them access to clean water, better roads, electricity connectivity, and youth employment.

From the semi-arid wards of Muminji, Nthawa, and Evurori, locals are calling for a results-oriented leader who will focus on service delivery rather than politics.

Benjamin Njue, a farmer from Gikuyari in Muminji Ward, said the next MP must defend the interests of local farmers, particularly those growing muguka, the region’s main cash crop.

“I expect my next MP to defend our muguka crop in Parliament whenever a bill is tabled to ban it,” he said.

Njue also urged fairness in the issuance of education bursaries, noting that former MP Geoffrey Ruku had set a good example by ensuring equal distribution to all schools and families.

In Nthawa Ward, Josephat Njuki expressed hopes for a leader who will promote equitable development across the constituency.

“Areas like Mumburi have been in darkness for years and need electricity, while places like Kathenge still lack access to clean water,” he said, adding that water scarcity remains the region’s biggest challenge.

From Evurori Ward, Edward Mugo called for a more approachable leader who maintains direct engagement with residents.

“We want a leader who comes to the ground to listen to our challenges,” Mugo said.

Catherine Wanjiru, another resident, appealed for peaceful campaigns and elections, urging candidates to accept the outcome of the vote.

“We want peace before and after the election,” she said.

The Mbeere North seat fell vacant following the resignation of Geoffrey Ruku, who was appointed Cabinet Secretary for Public Service and Human Capital Development.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has cleared four candidates for the by-election, with three emerging as the most visible contenders — UDA’s Leonard Wamuthende, former Muminji Ward MCA Newton Karish, and former Evurori Ward MCA Duncan Mbui.

The by-election is scheduled for November 27, with residents hoping the new MP will prioritize development, fairness, and inclusivity in leadership.
