Residents of Kathagutari village in Siakago, Mbeere North Sub-County, Embu County, can now access healthcare services closer to home following the official opening of Divine Mercy Medical Clinic.

The facility, which launched with a free medical camp, served over 250 residents last week.

For years, locals struggled to access treatment, with the nearest health center over 12 kilometers away in Siakago market.

Many recounted heartbreaking losses due to the long distance and poor road network.

Francis Nyaga, a resident, shared a painful experience of losing his wife last year while rushing her to the hospital.

“She gave birth on the rough road before we could reach Siakago, and she didn’t survive,” he said, highlighting the urgent need for a nearby medical facility.

Susan Muturi also recounted the tragic loss of her Form Three niece, who died on the way to the hospital after consuming poison.

“If we had a health facility nearby, we could have saved her life,” she lamented.

Many residents have lost their lives while being rushed to the hospital after suffering snakebites, which are rampant in the area.

Locals called on the government to collaborate with the facility, particularly in stocking antivenom medication, to address the recurring crisis.

St. Francis Xavier Parish Priest, Fr. Charles Mugendi, hailed the initiative as a major relief for the community. He urged residents to support and utilize the clinic, emphasizing the importance of caring for the sick and elderly.

Sr. Marta Nyaga, the facility’s administrator, reaffirmed their commitment to providing quality healthcare. She noted that the clinic aims to serve at least 300 patients monthly, addressing a critical gap in the area’s medical services.

The medical camp, hosted at Divine Mercy Kathagutari Technical Training Institute, was made possible through a collaboration between Divine Mercy Medical Clinic and the Ministry of Health. Beneficiaries expressed gratitude, terming the clinic a lifesaver.

With the facility now operational, the people of Kathagutari and Kiang’ombe have renewed hope for accessible and affordable healthcare, a crucial step toward improving lives in the region.
