A postmortem conducted at Embu Level 5 Hospital Mortuary has confirmed that Daniel Amaya, a second-year student at the University of Embu, died by drowning.

Amaya’s body was found floating in a dam within the university compound on Saturday, ending days of frantic search by his family, who had traveled from Kisii after he was reported missing last Wednesday.

Josphat Change Amaya, speaking on behalf of the family, said they searched hospitals and mortuaries in Embu before receiving the devastating news that a body had been spotted in the dam. Upon arrival, they confirmed it was their son.

“After the postmortem, the doctor informed us that, as of now, all he can confirm is that our son drowned, which led to his death. However, we are yet to understand how and what led him to the dam before he drowned,” he said.

Journalists covering the postmortem on Monday at the Embu Level 5 mortuary were barred from obtaining further details, as detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) overseeing the procedure ordered them to leave.

Attempts to seek clarification from the pathologist were unsuccessful, as they were informed that he left immediately after conducting the procedure.

The family is now demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Amaya’s death, questioning how he ended up in the dam.

They are calling on authorities to provide answers, insisting they deserve to know the truth.
