Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati is undergoing intensive medical care at a Nairobi hospital after being diagnosed with a serious illness.
The 63-year-old, whose condition has been kept private, has been in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for nearly a week, receiving advanced medical treatment.
A source from the hospital, speaking to a national media outlet, indicated that doctors are closely monitoring his situation.
“We are monitoring his situation at the ICU,” the source disclosed, without providing further details on his exact ailment.
Sources close to the family confirmed the severity of Chebukati’s illness, stating that he was rushed to the hospital after his condition worsened.
Chebukati, who served as IEBC chair from 2017 to 2023, is best known for overseeing Kenya’s contentious 2017 and 2022 general elections.
His tenure was marked by significant political and electoral challenges, including the nullification of the 2017 presidential election and the subsequent fresh polls.
Further details on his health status are expected to be shared as updates become available.
