President William Ruto is disappointed over former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s failure to clinch the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship in elections held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Ruto who spoke after results were announced, criticized African leaders for overlooking Odinga, stating that the continent had lost a chance to benefit from his leadership.
“I would not be truthful if I said I am not disappointed with Raila losing the AUC seat. He was the best candidate, and Africa missed an opportunity to be served by one of the finest,” Ruto said at a post-election dinner.
Despite the setback, the president reaffirmed his unwavering support for Odinga’s candidacy, praising the opposition leader’s dedication to national and continental affairs.
“Baba made me very proud. He was the best candidate we could put forward. Whenever I made an appointment, he was available. Whenever I traveled, he was there. As a politician, I have supported many candidates, but on this African Union chairmanship, Tinga exceeded all expectations despite being in his 80s,” Ruto added.
Odinga’s loss comes as a political blow to President Ruto, who had heavily invested diplomatic resources in securing support for his bid.
In the weeks to the elections, Ruto embarked on extensive lobbying efforts, visiting key nations, including Ethiopia, Burundi, Ghana, and China, to rally African leaders behind Odinga.
