As schools close doors for the April holiday, a teacher has emphasized the importance of parental involvement in nurturing children’s talents and interests during the break.
Caroline Ireri, a teacher at St. Ursula Girls Boarding Primary and Junior Secondary School, said children have a valuable opportunity to explore their passions and develop skills beyond the classroom.
She said without guidance and support from parents, this time off could be wasted, leading to missed opportunities for growth and development.
“We encourage parents to participate in their children’s activities during the holidays actively. By engaging with their children and providing opportunities for exploration, parents can help foster a sense of curiosity and a love for learning,” she observed.
Speaking during the school’s inter-house competitions, Ms. Ireri said spending quality time, engaging in activities together and parental involvement can make a difference in a child’s development.
“The CBC curriculum offers opportunities for practice and specialization at basic levels of education, and that is why we regularly get our pupils into the field for sporting activities,” she said.
Embu County Parent and Teachers Association (PTA) Chairman John Kathangu said children who receive support and encouragement from their parents are more likely to excel in their chosen pursuits.
“The holiday break presents a valuable opportunity for parents to actively engage with their children and support their endeavors beyond academic studies,” Kathangu said.
During the school’s Easter Monday inter-house competitions, Mt. Kilimanjaro house emerged victorious with 255 marks, followed by Mt. Ruwenzori (235 marks), Mt. Kenya (210 marks), and Mt. Elgon garnered 205 marks.
AnnFridah Wawira, a pupil-member of the winning house, attributed their success to teamwork and collaboration.
Wawira highlighted the significance of collective effort and unity among members as instrumental factors in securing victory.
The pupils engaged in sporting activities such as relays, walking races, football, handball, netball, and basketball.
St. Ursula Girls Boarding Primary and Junior Secondary School, a government institution sponsored by the Catholic Church, offers a serene and nurturing setting that ensures students have the space to explore, grow, and thrive.
