Gatoori villagers have a reason to smile after the Embu County government installed street lights in the area—giving hope for economic expansion.

The village, located in Manyatta Subcounty grappled with persistent darkness discouraging night business activities due to security concerns.

“This is a significant win for us. Initially, we could barely do our business at night,” said Rose Mutitu, a resident.

“Previously, shops closed around 8PM. With the improved road lighting and enhanced security, it is possible to work 24 hours,” added Alex Muturi, another resident.

The duo argued that businesses boom at night since many people are usually off work.

Locals are hopeful that the lights could help in reducing the insecurity cases which were on the rise in the area.

“We have been experiencing coffee theft at night. Through the help of these lights we shall be able to guard our properties,” said Dickson Murimi.

Area MCA Ibrahim Swaleh said the plan to light-up Kirimari Ward was a commitment aligned with the county strategic plan to transform Embu to a 24 hour economy.

“We will light up the Ward in phases. In phase one, we are lighting; Cylet /SDA road, Riamaciri market, Kangaru market, Kithungururu market, Koimugo, Spring Valley and Kathangari market,” he said.

Residents said the tarmacking of the Kangaru-Kairuri road a few years ago further transformed the village by improving accessibility and movement of farm produce.
